Bringing Math to Life through Stories

Math Corps team

Make Math Practices Accessible and Fun

Meet the MATH CORPS, a brave band of superheroes who use their math powers of thinking to trick an evil villain and save their galaxy. Working together, the Math Corps thwart common math misconceptions and help foster key practices through engaging narratives.

Teaching the Standards for Mathematical Practice

Each of the Math Corps characters embody one of the 8 Math Practices and explain the standard in a child-friendly way.

Lidah, the leader of the Math Corps team, embodies the standard, “Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them”. A good leader knows the strengths of their team members and recognizes when collaboration can be a better way to solve problems. She often teams up with the others, maximizing the impact of their powers and never gives up.

The standard “Reason abstractly and quantitatively”, challenging for early elementary teachers to explain, becomes a set of twins who help students understand why they need to consider both numbers and their meaning.

Multi-Media Resources

With content spanning K-5 math domains, teachers use the Math Corps posters, video lessons, physical comic books, and eBooks to help their students understand key practices like justifying one’s thinking, being persistent, and using different strategies. These materials available as part of Teachley’s math interventions. Learn more here.

My students are so engaged with the comic books and the videos that Teachley provides to teach these standards.

Physical and Electronic Books

In each story, Professor Possum makes the same mistakes children often make when learning math. The Math Corps heroes outwit the professor and model how to avoid these common misconceptions.

MATH CORPS VS. THE SERVE-O-MATIC

This episode features Lidah, who makes sense of problems and perseveres in solving them. She defeats Professor Possum's robot using her knowledge of equivalent fractions.

By embedding the math within engaging stories and contexts, students are able to see strong math practices in action.

Research-Driven Learning Objectives

As former teachers and experts in cognition and learning, we are dedicated to using research to develop math programs that better support how kids learn.

Math Corps was made possible with grant funding from the National Institutes of Health. With a new grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Teachley is creating even more bilingual Math Corps video lessons, comics, and eBooks spanning K-5 math domains. Early access is available for 2022-23 school year. Find out more!

Aligned with Common Core and State Standards

Math Corps addresses the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practices as well as many other CCSS-M, TEKS, and other state standards, including the math domains Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base Ten, Measurement & Data, and Number & Operations - Fractions.

Teachley Math Practice Kits have been developed with the generous support of the Small Business Innovation Research program with awards granted by the Department of Education, National Institutes of Health, and National Science Foundation.
