New NIH grant expands Teachley Problem Solving

With a new grant from the National Institutes of Health, Teachley is expanding our problem-solving software to improve the way K-5 students learn story problems! The project includes a new partnership with The ASSISTments Foundation to broaden access.

Improving math problem solving in the elementary grades is vital to ensure children have the essential foundational skills to succeed in mathematics courses and pursue careers in STEM.

Initially developed with philanthropic support, Teachley Problem Solving: Fractions supports 3rd - 5th grade students in developing a strong understanding of fractions while creating, comparing, and solving fractions operations using digital models. The fractions software significantly improved 3rd - 5th grade students' fractions problem solving by 20%. Access the white paper here.

With a Fast-Track Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health, Teachley is transforming the way elementary students learn to solve math story problems. The software will include:

expanded story content - covering all K-5 math domains.

classification tools - help students understand problem structure.

clear visual models - support creating clear math models with easy-to-use digital tools.

justification tools - allow students to share their thinking and develop strong arguments.

formative assessment - gives teachers insight into students’ process and understanding.

As part of this new grant, Teachley Problem Solving will integrate with the ASSISTments platform, a math curriculum and formative assessment platform developed by The ASSISTments Foundation and Wooster Polytechnic Institute (WPI). This exciting partnership will bring the power of Teachley’s digital math problem solving tools to ASSISTments, allowing elementary students access to the tools and giving teachers critical insight into students’ problem-solving process.

Using WPI’s E-TRIALS platform, Teachley Problem Solving will undergo rigorous evaluation to study the impact on students’ mathematical problem solving.

Teachley Problem Solving: Fractions is available with Teachley’s math programs, including Teachley Math Intervention and Fractions Boost Curriculum. Learn more about bringing these to your school/district here.
